Add curvature and layers of great detail for a more realistic feel on a custom 3D Challenge Coin. We aim to please and our customer reviews prove it. We would be honored to help you create a coin that is uniquely you.
Traditional challenge coins typically feature two levels of metal, including raised and recessed areas, giving them a classic appearance. In contrast, a 3D challenge coin offers a more intricate design, allowing for an unlimited number of levels to create ultra-realistic details. Custom designers can craft a one-of-a-kind 3D challenge coin with rounded edges and smooth gradations. While 2D Challenge Coins have two flat layers for a simple look, 3D Challenge Coins provide a three-dimensional effect with complex shapes, curves, and textures. The lifelike appearance of a 3D challenge coin sets it apart from 2D coins, which are often preferred for their traditional appeal and lower cost. The 3D challenge coin is chosen for its ability to capture nuanced details, offering a more visually engaging and tactile experience.
3D challenge coins are an excellent option to create more depth and layered texture. These 3D challenge coins look best for creating emblems, statues, mascots, or buildings. You can easily create a realistic design with these challenge coins, and they will always remain a long-lasting keepsake.
Here are a few more popular design options for 3D challenge coins.
One way to highlight the small details and create visual depth is to use antique coin plating for your challenge coins. Antique coin plating is especially visually appealing for 3D coins due to the amount of sculpted edges and sculpted depth.
Highly-detailed logos are also an excellent option for 3D challenge coins. These challenge coins perfectly bring out visual complexities that look fantastic on sculpted 3D coins. You can easily create a mascot with carved elements for a unique design.
Another popular design choice for 3D challenge coins is to use cut-to-shape for a truly unique design. Clients can choose their own design options to create a unique coin that's not available anywhere else. Creating unique 3D challenge coins is a great way to create a valuable memento that will always bring back many memories.
Using larger coin sizes is another popular design option for creating 3D challenge coins. These bigger coins give you the flexibility to highlight small details while also fully taking advantage of the sculpted elements and rounded areas of a 3D challenge coin.

Challenge coins have various processes and types of coins to achieve different design stylings. Simply put, Soft Enamel are textured, with the enamel filled below the metal ridges, while Hard Enamel are smooth, the overfilled enamel polished smooth against the metal. You can have one side of your coin be soft enamel and the other side be hard enamel.
Challenge coins can come in a variety of sizes and shapes but the most common coin size is 2.0”, followed by 1.75” and then 1.5”. If we have concerns about your selection our team will let you know the optimal size of your coin based on your design.
The majority of our coins are die struck into brass. Large, custom shaped, or designs with large cutout areas will be cast from a zinc alloy. We made a video that goes into further details here.
Die struck coins have the designs transferred to a front & back mold, the raw brass being struck by each mold with enough force to transfer both the raised & recessed areas of the design into the brass. Die Cast molds are fit together and molten zinc metal is injected into the die to create the coin blank. You can also read our article in our resources section here!
