Types of Military Challenge Coins

Military challenge coins come in a wide variety of types, each with its own unique design, purpose, and significance. Here are some common types of military challenge coins:

  1. Unit Coins: These are often the most basic type of military challenge coin. They are typically given to members of a particular military unit to foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
  2. Commander's Coins: Commanders may give these coins to their subordinates as tokens of appreciation or recognition for outstanding service. They often feature the commander's insignia or emblem.
  3. Deployment Coins: These coins are given to service members who have been deployed to specific regions or operations. They serve as a commemoration of the deployment and the challenges faced during that time.
  4. Achievement Coins: These coins are awarded for exceptional performance, achievement, or completion of specific tasks or training. They can be given for actions ranging from successful completion of a difficult mission to outstanding marksmanship.
  5. Memento Coins: These are often given to commemorate a special event, such as a change of command, retirement, or anniversary. They serve as a lasting reminder of the occasion.
  6. Challenge Coins: These are the traditional "challenge" coins, exchanged as a part of a game where members of a group attempt to "challenge" others by showing their coin. If someone can't produce their coin, they might owe a drink or some other consequence.
  7. Morale Coins: Distributed to boost morale within a unit, these coins might feature uplifting slogans, symbols of unity, or images that represent the group's values.
  8. Recognition Coins: Similar to achievement coins, these are given to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional qualities, whether it's leadership, teamwork, or innovation.
  9. Commemorative Coins: Issued to honor significant events or anniversaries related to a military unit or organization. They may celebrate historical milestones or pay tribute to fallen comrades.
  10. Special Operations Coins: Units within the special operations forces often have their own unique coins, representing their specialized skills and elite status.
  11. Foreign Partner Coins: These coins are exchanged with members of allied foreign military units as a gesture of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect.
  12. VIP Coins: Given to high-ranking officials or visitors, these coins serve as tokens of appreciation for their support or as a symbol of the partnership between units or nations.
  13. Inter-Service Coins: These are sometimes used to foster cooperation between different branches of the military. They are often exchanged when members of different branches meet.

These are just a few examples of the many types of military challenge coins and their uses. Each coin type carries its own meaning and significance, contributing to the rich tradition and culture surrounding challenge coins within the military and beyond.

What's the Difference Between Soft Enamel and Hard Enamel Challenge Coins?

Challenge coins have various processes and types of coins to achieve different design stylings. Simply put, Soft Enamel are textured, with the enamel filled below the metal ridges, while Hard Enamel are smooth, the overfilled enamel polished smooth against the metal. You can have one side of your coin be soft enamel and the other side be hard enamel.

What is the Typical Size of a Challenge Coin?

Challenge coins can come in a variety of sizes and shapes but the most common coin size is 2.0”, followed by 1.75” and then 1.5”. If we have concerns about your selection our team will let you know the optimal size of your coin based on your design.

What Are My Challenge Coins Made From?

The majority of our coins are die struck into brass. Large, custom shaped, or designs with large cutout areas will be cast from a zinc alloy. We made a video that goes into further details here.

Difference Between Die Struck and Die Cast Challenge Coin?

Die struck coins have the designs transferred to a front & back mold, the raw brass being struck by each mold with enough force to transfer both the raised & recessed areas of the design into the brass. Die Cast molds are fit together and molten zinc metal is injected into the die to create the coin blank. You can also read our article in our resources section here!

After your order proceeds to production, the typical timeframe for production and delivery is between 3 to 3.5 weeks. Our customer care team will provide you with detailed timelines tailored to your custom order before finalizing your purchase.
