Popular Police Coin Design Options

When creating police challenge coins, design details matter. The right elements transform a standard coin into a powerful symbol of identity, service, and pride that officers are proud to carry.

Department-focused police coins highlight the symbols that define your agency. Incorporating official insignia and meaningful design elements ensures your custom police challenge coins accurately represent your department’s authority and values.

Official badge or shield design: Featuring your department’s badge or shield creates instant recognition and reinforces authenticity. It anchors the coin in official law enforcement identity.

Department seal or city emblem: Adding a city seal or municipal emblem connects the coin to the community officers serve and protect. It reflects both civic pride and local heritage.

Badge numbers or unit numbers: Personalizing police coins with badge or unit numbers makes each coin more meaningful. This customization adds individual recognition to an already symbolic piece.

Department motto or core values: Including a motto such as “To Protect and Serve” reinforces the principles that guide your agency. It ensures the coin reflects not just who you are, but what you stand for.

Thin Blue Line symbolism: The Thin Blue Line remains one of the most recognized law enforcement symbols. When incorporated respectfully, it represents unity, sacrifice, and the commitment to protect the public.

Specialized units often create custom police coins that reflect their unique mission and operational identity. These coins highlight the skill, discipline, and teamwork required in high-demand assignments. Unit-specific police coins build pride, strengthen camaraderie, and reinforce a shared sense of mission within every division:

SWAT and Tactical Teams: Tactical coins often feature bold graphics, weapon silhouettes, or mission-based insignia that represent precision and readiness. They serve as powerful morale coins within elite units.

K-9 Units: K-9 police coins commonly showcase both handler and canine imagery, honoring the partnership and trust required in the field. These designs celebrate loyalty and teamwork.

Detectives and Investigations: Investigation unit coins typically include detective shields, magnifying glass imagery, or division insignia. They recognize the dedication and analytical skill behind complex casework.

Traffic Enforcement: Traffic unit coins may incorporate motorcycle silhouettes, patrol vehicles, or highway symbolism. They acknowledge the critical role officers play in roadway safety.

Narcotics and Task Forces: Task force coins often combine agency insignia to reflect multi-jurisdictional cooperation. These designs emphasize collaboration and specialized enforcement efforts.

Marine or Aviation Units: Marine and aviation police coins highlight boats, helicopters, or aircraft imagery. They recognize the expanded skill set required to operate in water or air environments.

Police coins also serve an important commemorative role. A commemorative police coin preserves moments in department history and ensures they are never forgotten. Departments frequently create coins to:

Mark department anniversaries

Commemorate major operations

Celebrate academy graduation classes

Honor fallen officers

Recognize retiring chiefs or command staff

The challenge coin tradition traces its roots to the military, where coins symbolized belonging and brotherhood. Law enforcement agencies adopted this tradition to strengthen internal culture and recognize excellence.

Today, police coins are:

Presented by chiefs and sheriffs

Carried by officers as a sign of pride

Collected as symbols of professional milestones

Exchanged between agencies as gestures of respect

This enduring tradition continues to unite officers across jurisdictions and generations. Whether you’re creating coins for recognition, morale, commemorative events, or leadership presentation, we’re here to help you design a coin your department will be proud to carry.

What's the Difference Between Soft Enamel and Hard Enamel Challenge Coins?

Challenge coins have various processes and types of coins to achieve different design stylings. Simply put, Soft Enamel are textured, with the enamel filled below the metal ridges, while Hard Enamel are smooth, the overfilled enamel polished smooth against the metal. You can have one side of your coin be soft enamel and the other side be hard enamel.

What is the Typical Size of a Challenge Coin?

Challenge coins can come in a variety of sizes and shapes but the most common coin size is 2.0”, followed by 1.75” and then 1.5”. If we have concerns about your selection our team will let you know the optimal size of your coin based on your design.

What Are My Challenge Coins Made From?

The majority of our coins are die struck into brass. Large, custom shaped, or designs with large cutout areas will be cast from a zinc alloy. We made a video that goes into further details here.

Difference Between Die Struck and Die Cast Challenge Coin?

Die struck coins have the designs transferred to a front & back mold, the raw brass being struck by each mold with enough force to transfer both the raised & recessed areas of the design into the brass. Die Cast molds are fit together and molten zinc metal is injected into the die to create the coin blank. You can also read our article in our resources section here!
